BOSTON & SALEM FAMILY TRAVEL PLANNING
Boston is one of my favorite cities to recommend because it offers something for almost every age without feeling overwhelming.
Whether your family wants to walk the Freedom Trail, explore world-class museums, catch a Red Sox game, spend a day in Salem, or simply enjoy great food and beautiful neighborhoods, Boston packs a lot into a surprisingly walkable city.
The key is choosing the right hotel, knowing what to prioritize, and building a trip that feels enjoyable instead of exhausting.

WHY IT'S ONE OF MY GO-TO FAMILY GETAWAYS
Boston is one of those cities that feels much smaller than people expect.
Once you're in the right neighborhood, it's easy to explore on foot, making it a great choice for families who don't want to spend their vacation constantly getting in and out of the car.
I also love that Boston offers something beyond sightseeing. History comes to life, neighborhoods each have their own personality, and it's easy to mix iconic attractions with slower afternoons in a park, along the harbor, or over a great meal.
Adding Salem turns an already memorable trip into something even more unique, especially during the fall.
WHO I WOULD & WOULDN'T SEND TO BOSTON
Every family travels differently. Boston is fantastic for some travelers, but it isn't the right fit for everyone.
BOSTON IS A GREAT FIT IF...
-
You enjoy exploring on foot.
-
Your family likes history, museums, sports, or food.
-
You'd rather experience a city than spend every day at a resort.
-
Your children are curious and enjoy learning through experiences.
-
You like having plenty to do without needing to drive everywhere.
I'D PROBABLY RECOMMEND SOMETHING ELSE IF...
-
You're looking for a relaxing pool or beach vacation.
-
You dislike walking or navigating public transportation.
-
You're traveling with very young children who still need long afternoon naps every day.
-
You're hoping for a lower-budget destination.
-
You want warm weather year-round.
BEST TRIP LENGTH FOR BOSTON
For most families, I would look at:
3 NIGHTS
A great option if your focus is Boston itself and you want a long weekend of history, great food, and a few key attractions.
4-5 NIGHTS
My favorite recommendation for most families. This give you time to enjoy Boston at a comfortable pace while adding a day trip or overnight stay in Salem.
6+ NIGHTS
Ideal if you're combining Boston with Salem and another part of New England, such as Cape Ann, Portsmouth, or coastal Maine.
WHERE I'D START IN BOSTON
Where you stay in Boston can completely change how the trip feels. I generally recommend choosing a hotel based on what you want to experience rather than simply chasing the lowest nightly rate.
HAMPTON INN BOSTON SEAPORT DISTRICT
One of my favorite value recommendations because it offers modern rooms, complimentary breakfast, and an excellent location for exploring Boston without paying luxury hotel prices.
Best fit: Families who plan to spend most of the day exploring the city and appreciate breakfast included.
Watch-out: Rooms aren't huge, so larger families may prefer connecting rooms or suites.
THE BOXER BOSTON
A boutique hotel with plenty of character in a location that makes walking to many of Boston's biggest attractions easy.
Best fit: Couples, families with older children, and travelers looking for a boutique experience.
Watch-out: As with many boutique hotels in Boston, rooms tend to be smaller than travelers from suburban areas expect.
THE NEWBURY BOSTON
When a family wants an elevated Boston experience, this is often where I'd begin.
Beautiful location overlooking Boston Public Garden, thoughtful service, and a classic Boston feel makes it one of my favorite luxury recommendations.
Best fit: Celebration trips, milestone vacations, and families looking for a luxury city stay.
Watch-out: Premium location comes with premium pricing, and valet parking can add significantly to the overall cost.
HOW I TYPICALLY HELP WITH BOSTON TRIPS
Boston works well for either Planning-Only or Full-Service Planning.
With Planning-Only, I create a Personalized Travel Plan with my recommended hotel, suggested activities, dining ideas, and trusted booking resources. I provide the Personalized Travel Plan. You make the reservations.
With Full-Service Planning, I take care of the research, reservations, flights, coordination, and the countless details that go into making the trip feel easy from beginning to end.
The best fit depends less on the destination and more on whether you want to book the trip yourself or hand the planning and reservations off to me.
WHAT FAMILIES USUALLY GET WRONG
Boston is easy to enjoy, but only if you plan it thoughtfully.
Common mistakes include:
-
Trying to see too much in one day.
-
Underestimating how much walking is involved.
-
Renting a car for the entire trip when it's often unnecessary.
-
Choosing a hotel far outside the city to save money, then spending that savings on transportation and time.
-
Visiting Salem without considering seasonal crowds.
-
Assuming every neighborhood offers the same experience.
Boston rewards slower, more intentional planning.
WHY BOSTON IS ON MY LIST
I recommend destinations that become easier, not harder, with good planning.
Boston is a perfect example.
The right hotel, a realistic itinerary, and knowing when to walk, ride the T, or simply slow down can completely change how the trip feels.
Instead of spending your vacation figuring out where to go next, you get to enjoy discovering one of America's most history cities together.
IS BOSTON & SALEM RIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY?
If your family enjoys history, food, sports, walkable neighborhoods, and experiences you'll still be talking about years later, Boston could be a fantastic fit.
And if after talking through your trip I think another destination would serve your family better, I'll tell you that too.
My job isn't to convince you to visit Boston.
It's to recommend the trip that's the right fit for your family.
Not sure if Boston is the right choice? That's exactly what our consultation is for. We'll talk through your family, your travel style, and what you want this trip to feel like before deciding on the destination.
BOSTON, MA FAMILY TRAVEL | FAQ
Is Boston a good destination for families?
Yes. Boston offers a mix of history, museums, parks, sports, and waterfront attractions that work well for families, especially those with school-age children.
How many days should we spend in Boston?
I usually recommend 4-6 nights if you're combining Boston with Salem. That gives you enough time to enjoy both without feeling rushed.
Do I need a rental car?
Usually, no. One of Boston's biggest advantages is its walkability. Depending on your itinerary, public transportation and ride shares are often easier than driving and parking.
Is Salem worth adding to a Boston trip?
Absolutely. Salem makes an excellent day trip or overnight addition, especially in the spring and fall. Just keep in mind that October brings significantly larger crowds and should be planned well in advance.
Should I choose Planning-Only or Full-Service Planning for Boston?
If you'd like professional recommendations but prefer to make your own reservations, Planning-Only may be the right fit. I'll create the Personalized Travel Plan with recommended hotels, suggested activities, dining ideas, and trusted booking resources so you can book with confidence.
If you'd rather have everything coordinated for you, including flights, accommodations, reservations, and trip logistics, Full-Service Planning is likely the better choice.
