COSTA RICA FAMILY TRAVEL PLANNING

Costa Rica is one of those destinations where every day can look completely different.

One morning you might be zip lining through the rainforest. The next you're relaxing in natural hot springs, spotting monkeys on your balcony, or watching the sunset from the beach.

It's an incredible family destination, but it's also one where thoughtful planning makes a huge difference.

WHY IT'S ONE OF MY GO-TO FAMILY GETAWAYS

Costa Rica offers something that's surprisingly hard to find.

Families don't have to choose between adventure and relaxation.

You can spend one day exploring a rainforest, another soaking in hot springs, another spotting sloths and monkeys, and another simply enjoying a beautiful resort.

It's active when you want it to be and relaxing when you need it to be.

WHO I WOULD & WOULDN'T SEND TO COSTA RICA

Every family pictures Costa Rica a little differently.

The key is matching the itinerary to how your family actually likes to travel.

COSTA RICA IS A GREAT FIT IF...

  • Your family enjoys wildlife and nature.

  • You want a vacation that's active without feeling rushed.

  • You like experiencing several different parts of a destination.

  • You're excited by unique experiences as much as beautiful resorts.

  • You're looking for an international trip that's welcoming to families.

I'D PROBABLY RECOMMEND SOMETHING ELSE IF...

  • You want to stay in one place for an entire week.

  • You're looking for an all-inclusive beach vacation.

  • You dislike changing hotels during a trip.

  • You want minimal driving.

  • You're looking for a quick long-weekend getaway.

BEST TRIP LENGTH FOR COSTA RICA

For most families, I would look at:

7 NIGHTS

Perfect for experiencing two regions without trying to see everything.

8-10 NIGHTS

My favorite recommendation for most families. It allows enough time to experience Costa Rica's wildlife, adventure, and beautiful resorts without constantly feeling on the move.

10+ NIGHTS

Ideal for travelers wanting a slower pace or multiple regions throughout the country.

WHERE I'D START IN COSTA RICA

Costa Rica isn't a destination where I'd start by choosing a hotel.

I'd start by choosing the right combination of experiences.

For some families that means volcanoes and hot springs followed by the beach. For others, it's wildlife, rainforest adventures, and a luxury eco-lodge.

Once I understand what your family wants from the trip, the accommodations usually become much easier to narrow down.

ARENAL OBSERVATORY LODGE & TRAILS

One of my favorite recommendations for families wanting to immerse themselves in Costa Rica's incredible scenery and wildlife.

Best fit: Families who want hiking, wildlife, volcano views, and a true nature experience.

Watch-out: This is about the destination and surroundings more than luxury amenities.

SPRINGS RESORT & SPA AT ARENAL

One of Costa Rica's most impressive family-friendly luxury resorts, offering hot springs, beautiful views, and enough activities to keep everyone entertained.

Best fit: Families wanting a resort experience alongside adventure.

Watch-out: This property is often the highlight of the trip, so I usually recommend allowing enough time to actually enjoy it.

ANDAZ COSTA RICA RESORT AT PENINSULA PAPAGAYO

A beautiful beachfront resort that balances relaxation with easy access to outdoor adventures.

Best fit: Families looking to end an active trip with several days of beach and resort time.

Watch-out: Costa Rica is much more than the beach. I rarely recommend spending the entire vacation at one coastal resort.

HOW I TYPICALLY HELP WITH COSTA RICA TRIPS

Costa Rica is currently a Full-Service Planning destination.

Unlike some of my U.S. destinations, Costa Rica involves multiple regions, private transfers, local guides, and a number of moving pieces that all need to work together.

To make sure those pieces come together smoothly, I partner with a trusted in-country destination management company that helps coordinate the logistics while I oversee the overall planning and client experience.

That partnership allows me to confidently recommend Costa Rica while making sure you have knowledgeable local support on the ground.

I'd rather partner partner with experts on the ground than pretend to know every road, transfer, and local operator myself. I believe that's how my clients get the best possible experience.

WHAT FAMILIES USUALLY GET WRONG

The biggest mistake I see is trying to experience all of Costa Rica in one trip.

Other common mistakes include:

  • Underestimating drive times.

  • Changing hotels too often.

  • Choosing accommodations before deciding what experiences matter most.

  • Trying to fit every adventure into one itinerary.

  • Forgetting to leave time to simply enjoy the destination.

Costa Rica is best experienced at a pace that leaves room for unexpected wildlife sightings, beautiful views, and memorable moments.

WHY COSTA RICA IS ON MY LIST

Costa Rica reminds families that adventure doesn't have to mean sacrificing comfort.

With the right itinerary, you can experience rainforests, volcanoes, wildlife, and beautiful resorts in a way that feels exciting without becoming exhausting.

That's exactly the kind of trip I enjoy recommending.

IS COSTA RICA RIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY?

If your family wants an international adventure filled with wildlife, incredible scenery, and experiences you'll remember for years, Costa Rica may be exactly what you're looking for.

If after talking through your trip I think another destination would be a better fit, I'll tell you that too.

My job isn't to recommend Costa Rica.

It's to recommend the trip that's right fit for your family.

Not sure if Costa Rica is the right fit? That's exactly what our consultation is for.

COSTA RICA FAMILY TRAVEL | FAQ

Is Costa Ricava good destination for families?

Absolutely. Costa Rica is one of the best destinations in Central America for families who enjoy wildlife, outdoor adventure, and comfortable accommodations.

Why do you only offer Full-Service Planning for Costa Rica?

Costa Rica often includes multiple hotels, private transfers, local guides, and carefully coordinated logistics. I believe this type of trip benefits from Full-Service Planning to ensure everything works together the way it should.

Is Costa Rica an all-inclusive destination?

It can be, but that's rarely how I recommend experiencing it. Most families get much more out of Costa Rica by combining nature, adventure, and a few different regions instead of staying at one resort for the entire trip.

How many days should we spend in Costa Rica?

I usually recommend 8-10 nights. That provides enough time to experience more than one region while still enjoying a relaxed pace.

Why do you work with an in-country destination management company?

Because local expertise matters. My trusted destination management partner helps coordinate transportation, guides, and logistics within Costa Rica while I oversee the overall planning process and make sure the trip fits the families goals.
